Okay, so it's been a few days and you guys have been playing like mad....so what is the overall consensus?

Throwing 06, 07, and 08 out the window...how does it compare to 04 and 05?  Daily working okay? Glitches? (especially turbo related) and overall online and offline playability...

Based on the feedback I'll decide whether to buy it or not.

No turbo glitches. Hopefully next year they'll fix that, and turbo won't work at all.

Connectivity is about the same. Some issue for some people. Most folks are having no issues.

Zero lag for me, unlike 04-05.

Graphics destroy that atari looking 04-05 game.

Until they fix the daily (as in no more starting over, there's no redo's in golf), I won't play it. So I'll leave the daily feedback to others...

Offline playability kinda sucks, as you lose your attribute points, while shooting 50. LMAO. But we'll get to the point where we have a work around for that weak arss feature.

As I alluded to before, the online playability is great for most people. Simultaneous play is bad arss. You can play nine holes in 10 minutes or less, online.

Well, everything was fine on the daily until it froze late last night.  The leaderboard cleared moving on to the next event, then it decided to re-appear all the scores from the night before and it hasn't moved since.  Apparently this happened on the X-Box on Wednesday and hasn't changed yet either so I don't know what to say about that. Will EA fix it...I would hope so since this is within the first few days of it's release

Gamernet is fantastic this year, and the stability online peer to peer seems to be solid from what I've heard so far...I'm sure someone will chime in on that. I like it, a little cheezy in the drive department with driving alot of Par 4's, but the graphics are pretty sweet, plays well and there seems to be alot of gamers coming back.

If the daily gets back working, I would definately recommend it just for that and the Gamernet.

Very similiar to that of HSG's Real Time Tournament format for those who have experienced it.

I think it's identical to 08 except you hit the ball 50 yards further.

Daily is broken.
Turbo glitches ARE there.  You can tap around those holes that have them if you can tap full.

Haven't played any peer-to-peer matches yet.

Graphics are good...they should be tho, it's golf.  They aren't anything to blow your mind though.

5/10

It is 05 with next gen graphics, a broken daily and a blue draw shot disguised as tuned clubs. Stop ripping the game you babies.

Maybe that was an unfair score, but, I'm not gonna sugar coat anything for my boy Whoop.  I'll try again.

Gameplay - The only thing that is similar to 05 is the distance you can hit a ball.  Period. Other than that, I see no real difference from the 08 version.  Swing system, loft, putting are all the same as 08.

Online - Daily is broken within 1 week.  Go figure.   Given EA's track record of releasing games and leaving them alone thereafter, I'm not holding out much hope for a quick fix.  Peer-to-peer I can't give an opinion on, haven't played any matches.  Seems to be getting favorable reviews from other people in that area though.

Graphics - When I think good graphics, I think MGS4, COD4, Gears, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, etc.  This is a golf game...there are trees, water, sand...it shouldn't be that difficult in this day and age to put a visually pleasing golf game out there.  EA hasn't done anything mind blowing in this department, but, the graphics certainly are not lacking either.

Offline - I doubt many people give a rats about this as most people here will not spend too much time offline after there CAG is built.  One positive thing to say about it is that if you have trouble sleeping, just pop in the game and listen to commentator Sam Torrance.  You'll be asleep in no time.

If Andrea hadn't bought the game yet, and I had known about the daily, I would not have let her buy it.  My prediction is that by November, TW will be a ghost town at TGV.  There will be a few diehards who continue to play it, but, the glory days of years past will not be returning anytime with the latest installment of this game.

7 of 10 is as high as I can go right now.

It's nothing like 05 once you take away the similar hitting distance.  Putting is different.  Different loft system.  The daily actually worked.  Tour mode is different. Maxing your CAG is different.

Not saying any of these is necessarily a bad thing, but, he asked if it was like 05.  Outside hitting the ball a mile, there aren't any similarities that I see.   People are free to think I'm ripping it, I'm just giving my honest opinion.  I'm not one to throw out 9's and 10's like they're candy.

I agree with E on the graphics I like more realistic looking and to me it looks more cartoony! JMO  As far as gameplay

I had some lag at Riviera today on 2 holes. That however has been my only problems. I havent used Turbo yet so I cant speak to that though it is easier to tap for boost.

I cant seem to putt very well. I think that is because I am overreading the break. I have never like the set putting distances because I cant get a 15 footer etc. That is a preference not a problem but I just mentioned it.

I hate all the driveables in the game but most likely people will get used to them.

The building of the CAG to me is dumb but if they had spent a little more time thinking it thru it would have been pretty nice. EX I shouldnt be punished for not boosting a shot and yet rewarded for landing a drive in the rough trying to improve my power!

I havent been online yet so I cant speak to that.

I think that if the online is fixed and stays fixed(I know this is EA so I said if) I think the game will get back a lot of players. Overall I think it is much better. I bought it to play with buddies offline and build up the CAG(I enjoy that) but if the online stays stable and the Daily is fixed I think it can be one of the staples here again.

I will give it 8.5.

I don't disagree with anyone's thoughts really. I think that Drgnfyr5's post right above mine, is pretty much spot on though.

I wanted to add that I hate drivable par 4's. And I hate the fact that you can drive the ball unrealistic distances. IMHO, driver should go no more that 330 without wind or elevation help. 3 wood should max around 290-300.

Thanks for all the input so far fellas....At the moment I'm leaning toward the side that I won't be buying the game.  I bought TW08 out of tradition pretty much and I played it for maybe 3 days and never again.  I'd rather spend that $60 on RFOM:2 or something like that...

I'll give it more time and see what you think as time progresses.

Here's my take:

Its a next-gen game like 07 and 08 were and its hard to compare it to 04 and 05 just because its so different.

Honestly it really is very much like 08 with some changes/tweaks to me.  1) You can jack the ball waaay further, and 05 club distances are a good comparison.  The club tuner is a good idea, but it double edge swords because the way I ended up is absolutely totally unrealistic to real golf.  2) GamerNet seems nicer with the challenges just as you play the offline game.  3) The varying statistics doesn't bother me too much, but if you are going to be playing for elite scores on the daily or against other very good players.. you kind of need 12.0 power at the very least.

It is odd that I can say this, but it is how I feel:  It is an improvement on 08 and yet I got discouraged on playing it much quicker than last year at the same time.  Driving the green contests on par 4's and even a few par 5's isn't really golf.  I have come to enjoy working out how to manage a golf hole from tee to green and that is why I still play HSG and enjoy that long term.  Even tour mode doesn't seem like it is realistic in any way because of the ridiculous length of the clubs.

I have only been playing this game with a stock sixaxis, so I can't tell ya about turbo glitches.  There are some holes that have lagged, and I would pretty much tell ya those are the ones that are going to turbo glitch ya.  The swing feedback is nice as you can see how you swung through the ball and how you are miss-hitting it (if you did of course).

The simultaneous play is very nice. I will give EA that.  But its long overdue at this point.

Graphics wise I think I am in the minority because I am not liking them at all.  It's a step backwards from 08 IMO.  The trees look like pixelated crap.

Dan:
I am not ripping the game for the sake of ripping the game.  I WANT to like this game.  I find it sad that the golf game that looks totally cartoony plays more like actual golf that the one with PGA Tour in the title.  There are exceedingly few par 5s in 09 that I don't hit driver/wedge.

At least you guys have a playable game! I was broke and wasn't able to get the PS2 version yet...and good thing too. The PS2 version has No Online, No Mini Games, Shot sticks are screwed up and can't be changed, No CAG building Tiger Challenge. Just Tour Mode pretty much....so an offline cluster @$%#.

Glad I still Have Tiger 04 and 08 to play with when I'm bored.

I am actually surprised they came out with a PS2 version.  They did away with the PC version, and I would have thought they would do the same with PS2 as well.  I guess they need their sales to dip below X number of units in a year for that to happen.

I thik its far better then 08, I am not maxed so I can't comment on driving greens yet, but then again I like Arcade golf, I am not trying to play a sim, I want to hit the ball 450 yards..lol

Seriously, if the drivables get annoying I will tune the clubs so they dont hit so far....which may be an idea for tourneys etc....certain tuning specifics required...hmmm

Graphics, same as last year, looks like the exact same thing....

The idea of changing attributes are cool, keeps me on my game, and not always going for the long smash, instead I am playing more course management, shot/shot type and what attibute it helps...

the Club tuning is like the Sugar on top, I love this feature, being able to tune out my Irons so they just stick on the green....thats what its all about right there....

I am still in the early stages, but so far i am enjoying it alot more then I have in past year's game, definitly IMO the best of the Next Gen....

early Rating

8.8/10
